New Garage Door Cost in Delaware County, Ohio: Prices, Permits and What Changes the Quote
A new garage door is one of the bigger exterior projects most homeowners take on, and the price can vary a lot depending on size, material, insulation and what has to happen to the opening. If you're in Delaware, Ohio or elsewhere in Delaware County, this guide lays out published price ranges, what moves a quote up or down, and the local questions (permits, HOAs, contracts) to settle before you sign.
The figures below are published national estimates, not quotes. Local companies set their own prices after seeing the door and the opening.
How much does a new garage door cost?
Published estimates, not quotes (Fixr Jan 2025; This Old House Mar 2026). Delaware County companies' quotes vary.

| New single steel door, installed | $700–$2,000 (avg ≈ $993) | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| New double door, installed | $1,175–$4,075 | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| Insulated single door, installed | $700–$2,300 | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| Old door removal and disposal | $50–$200 | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| Full door replacement | $970–$1,580 | This Old House, Mar 2026 |

Most single-car steel doors in published guides land in the low thousands or below. Double doors, carriage-style designs, custom colors and windows push the number up. For repair prices, such as springs, cables and panels, see our garage door repair cost guide for Delaware, Ohio.

What drives the price of a new garage door
- Size. A double door has more material, heavier springs and more hardware than a single.
- Material. Steel is the most common choice in published guides. Wood, composite and full-view glass doors usually cost more.
- Insulation. Insulated doors cost more than single-layer steel. Many homeowners with attached garages in central Ohio weigh that against comfort in winter, when the Columbus area averages about 103 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991–2020 normals).
- Style and windows. Carriage-house panels, decorative hardware and window sections add cost and may need HOA approval.
- Springs and hardware. A new door usually comes with new springs sized to its weight, plus tracks and rollers. Ask what's included.
- The opening. Replacing a door in the same opening is simpler than widening one, which involves framing and a new header.
- The opener. A new door is a natural time to replace an old opener, but it's optional. See repair or replace your opener.
Repair or replace the whole door?
Not every damaged door needs replacing. A single dented section can sometimes be swapped, and published guides put panel replacement at $150–$1,000 (Fixr, Jan 2025) or $440–$725 (This Old House, Mar 2026). Matching a panel on an older builder model can be hard, though, and if several sections are damaged, the door is rusting through, or you're also replacing springs and the opener, a full door may be better value. Our panel replacement page covers that decision.
Housing age plays a role locally. Delaware County's median home was built in 2000, and about two-thirds were built between 1990 and 2019 (ACS 2020–2024), so many original builder doors are now 10 to 30 years old. Older areas see more full replacements: Westerville's median build year is 1982, Worthington's is 1963, and about a fifth of homes in the City of Delaware were built before 1960.
Permits for a new garage door in Delaware County
Most repairs don't need a permit, but a new door, and especially a resized opening, may. Rules differ in the City of Delaware, Delaware County's townships, and cities like Powell, Westerville and Dublin. Ask your installer or building department.
For unincorporated township areas, the county office is Delaware County Building Safety, (740) 833-2200. The City of Delaware has its own Building Division at (740) 203-1600. Neither has published a garage-door-specific rule that we could find, so call before your project if your installer isn't sure. New doors also carry a wind-load rating; ask your installer for the manufacturer's label and installation instructions.
HOA approval
In HOA communities, check architectural guidelines before changing door style, color or windows. A like-for-like replacement may not need approval, but ask the association before you order. Our guide to HOA garage door rules in Delaware County explains what to gather and when to apply.
Signing at home? Know the cancel window
If you sign a contract at home, Ohio's Home Solicitation Sales Act generally lets you cancel until midnight of the third business day. Repairs you called the company out for are usually excluded, but extra products sold during that visit (like a new door or opener) may not be. Read the cancellation terms before you sign.
Getting and comparing quotes
New doors are often special-order items, so how you compare quotes matters more than for a quick repair. Ask each company for:
- A written quote with the door's brand, model, size, color, insulation and window options.
- What's included: removal and disposal, new springs, tracks, weatherstripping and opener work.
- The deposit amount, when the balance is due, and how a delay in delivery is handled.
- Who handles any permit, and whether its cost is in the price.
- Warranty terms for the door and the installation, in writing.
- Proof of liability insurance. Ohio doesn't issue a state license for garage door companies.
Be cautious with very large cash deposits. In 2022 the Ohio Attorney General sued a garage door company in northeast Ohio over nearly $182,000 in down payments for doors that were never delivered. See garage door repair scams in Ohio for more warning signs.
When you're ready, describe your door once on our new garage door installation page or request free quotes, and independent local companies can reply. You can also call (740) 471-1706.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a new garage door cost in Delaware County, Ohio?
Published guides put a single steel door, installed, at about $700 to $2,000 (Fixr, January 2025; average about $993) and a double door at about $1,175 to $4,075. This Old House (March 2026) lists full replacement at $970 to $1,580. These are national estimates, not quotes; Delaware County companies set their own prices.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Delaware, Ohio?
It depends on where you live and the scope. Most repairs don't need a permit, but a new door, and especially a resized opening, may. The City of Delaware, Delaware County's townships and cities like Powell, Westerville and Dublin have different rules, so ask your installer or building department.
Is an insulated garage door worth it in Ohio?
Many homeowners with attached garages choose insulation for winter comfort, since the Columbus area averages about 103 nights a year at or below freezing. Fixr (January 2025) puts an insulated single door at about $700 to $2,300 installed. Savings vary by home, so weigh it against how you use the garage.
Should I replace my garage door opener at the same time?
Not always. If the opener works well and is fairly new, you can keep it. If it's 10 to 15 years old, lacks photo-eye safety sensors or struggles with the door, replacing both at once can save a second visit. Ask companies to quote the door with and without a new opener.
